Text as variables in 'comment' block

I have 3 states (range, breakout, breakdown) for a 'comment' in the 'comment' block. I am using conditions attached to a 'modify variable' for each state (same variable with three possible options). These link to a 'comment' block. Label: state. Value, text selected. input box selected the variable. Ive tried selecting 'Text (code input)' at both the 'modify variable' block and inside the 'comment' block. No matter what the state, or the combination of 'text' or 'text (code input)', the comment on the chart displays a number. Why cant the comment block display a variable that happens to be text?
